Women In Film and Television-Louisiana aired our first Virtual Panel on July 25th. Actress To Actress was the first of panel of our series that will showcase the careers of Directors, Producers, Casting Directors, Actresses, and all other filmmaking positions in our industry. We delved into various topics such as our global pandemic crisis and it's effects on our entertainment industry, body positivity, Black Lives Matter and roles for People Of Color (POC), advice to aspiring filmmakers, and much more!

Women In Film & Television-Louisiana will hold our annual Iris Award Gala at the prestigious Marigny Opera House! Last year was an amazing experience and we look forward to this year's gala to be just as amazing, if not better! We will have great music provided by a DJ, delicious catering, and good times created by our WiFT-Louisiana atmosphere. Raise a toast to all of our accomplishments this year.

Award winning actress, Rutina Wesley, made her on-screen debut as the main character in the film How She Move, from British director Ian Iqbal Rashid. She then won the role, Tara Thorton, in the HBO series True Blood in 2007. In January 2015, it was announced that Wesley had been cast in a recurring role on the NBC drama series Hannibal. She portrayed Reba McClane, "a blind woman who enters into a relationship with Francis Dolarhyde (Richard Armitage), and helps soothe his murderous urges—at least at first." 

Wesley appeared as Liza Warner in the fourth season of Arrow. In 2016, Wesley was cast as lead character in the Oprah Winfrey Network drama series Queen Sugar, produced by Ava DuVernay and Oprah Winfrey. 

Rutina has been nominated for a Scream Award, Satellite Award, Screen Actor's Guild Award, NAACP Image Award, and a Black Reel Award.

September's Alice Evening is presenting powerhouse attorney, Bri Whetstone!

Bri Whetstone graduated from Tulane University with honors in English and Film Studies. She then worked in Business Affairs at LucasArts in San Francisco where she handled copyright applications, drafted contracts, managed international trademarks, and drafted the Lucas Companies' social media policy. Bri returned to New Orleans to attend Tulane Law school and focused on entertainment and intellectual property law. During school, Bri clerked for Provosty & Gankendorff, a local entertainment law firm, and handled several complex matters for some of New Orleans' biggest musical acts. Since graduating magna cum laude from law school, Bri has continued to develop an entertainment and intellectual property law practice that had helped numerous musicians, artists, writers, chefs, and filmmakers.

Writer

Mari Kornhauser is an award winning writer and director with three featured films produced and distributed. She has worked on assignment for various studios such as Sony and 20th Century Fox and sold a reality pilot to A & E. She also writes for television, her most recent produced credits are for HBO’s Peabody award winning show, TREME, created by David Simon and Eric Overmyer. One of her episodes,"Slip Away", was a Pen Finalist. Recently, she wrote her first three-act play, “Renovation”, which was work-shopped and produced by ArtSpot Productions in New Orleans. She has just finished an audience interactive one-act play,"Seeking Asylum", which starred WiFT-Louisiana's President, Shameka Gray, as lead. She has created a web-series (in post production) and is developing a one-hour television series. In addition, she is a tenured Full Professor at Louisiana State University where she teaches film and television writing at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.

A Baton Rouge native, Jason studied film in New York before graduating from the University Of New Orleans. Professionally, he has worked his way up from the bottom, from location managing to producing feature films and helming The Ranch Film Studios. He started a development company called Neutral Ground Films in 2007 that has produced multiple shorts, music videos, documentaries and iPhone Apps. He has also been a producer on the feature films MAGGIE, THE LOOKALIKE and THE TRUE DON QUIXOTE. In 2014 Jason founded The Ranch Film Studios in Chalmette, LA where he is titled the Head Of Possibilities (CEO). He has played an integral part in landing some of the biggest films to hit Louisiana. A list that includes TERMINATOR: GENISYS, FOCUS, DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN and THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON, to name a few. As Executive Committee Board Member and Treasurer for the Louisiana Film Entertainment Association (LFEA), Jason played a crucial role in maintaining and stabilizing the film tax credit incentive program. Additionally he is a board member of The Cool Cooperative, a graduate of Leadership St. Bernard and won the George Wood Memorial Award from the University of New Orleans.

Ms. Saundra Roberson is a 41 year employee of Caddo Parish Public Schools, currently employed as a Systems Analyst in the Information Technology Department.  During her career, she has had the opportunity to work at the elementary, middle and high school levels prior to transitioning to the Administrative Office.  Her first experience in grant writing came by happenstance, as the grant writer at the middle school where she was employed suddenly took an extended leave of absence.  The principal assigned the grant to the inexperienced Ms. Roberson, who became a grant writer overnight.  The grant was completed and the school received the State of Louisiana grant for their Brighter Futures program for teenage mothers.  Seeking to further her grant writing education, Ms. Roberson completed a grant writing workshop under Grambling State University professor Dr. Willie F. This month, our Education Committee will hold a Film Production Accounting workshop, which will be taught by Tamara Henderson, a brilliant Film Production Accountant!

Tamara Henderson is a 7 year veteran of Film Production Accounting and a member of the local 161 union. Her background in budget creation and project management lent itself well to production accounting where she moved up quickly after starting in 2011. Tamara has been a Key Accountant for the last 3 years on independent and studio films with budgets anywhere from 10 to 50 million. Part of her success is due to a keen understanding of the different approaches needed for independent movie work versus studio, including funding and reporting. The variety of projects she has completed means that she has worked with every major accounting software on the market, and is savvy in three different state tax incentive programs.

Carroll Morton has served as the City of New Orleans Manager of Entertainment Industry Development and has worked in the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Economy since 2009.  In that capacity Carroll advises the city on public policy for the film and entertainment industry, provided support for the city’s legislative efforts, developed workforce training programming and worked with non-profits to implement those programs.  She has produced events to market the film industry both locally and at the Sundance Film Festival.  Beginning in 2015 Carroll expanded her role to include managing the work of the 2018 Tricentennial Commission producing events and programming to celebrate the 300th Anniversary of the City of New Orleans.  She currently serves on the advisory board for The New Orleans Film Society and Women in Film and Television.

Necar Zadegan is a recent transplant to the Big Easy and stars as Special Agent Hannah Khoury in the CBS global franchise series, NCIS: New Orleans. A versatile actress known for a career on stage and screen, she made her Broadway debut when she originated the role of the Leper in Rajiv Joseph's Pulitzer Prize nominated and multi Tony award accoladed “Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo” opposite Robin Williams. 

Ms. Zadegan garnered critical acclaim for her portrayal of First Lady turned president Dalia Hassan on Fox’s hit series “24” and most recently for her delicate portrayal of Layla Shokrani alongside Tim Robbins and a Holly Hunter in the HBO drama “Here and Now” from Oscar winning screenwriter, creator Alan Ball. In the Bravo comedy on Netflix, “Girlfriends Guide to Divorce”, Ms. Zadegan plays the much beloved character written for her by show creator Marti Noxon, of fashionable and high powered attorney, Delia Banai. The show aired its fifth and final season last June. The year also saw Ms. Zadegan join the cast of the ABC hit “The Good Doctor”.  Other series regular roles include her portrayal of Dr. Gina Bandari on “Emily Owens MD” and in the lead opposite Greg Kinnear in the FOX comedy “Rake”. Some highlights from her many other credits include roles for Steven Spielberg company produced series “Extant”,  opposite Sean Bean in spy series “Legends” and a very memorable turn as the Queen of Iran in Showtime”s critical success “Masters of Sex” opposite Michael Sheen, with whom she also starred opposite in the Columbia Tri Star film, psychological thriller “Unthinkable” alongside Samuel L. Jackson.  She appeared with Adam Sandler in Judd Apatow’s “You Don’t Mess With the Zohan” and played the title role in “Elena Undone” which enjoyed success at independent festivals worldwide. 

Ms. Zadegan has worked at some of the worlds most prestigious theaters including The Mark Taper Forum, the Royal Dramatic Theater of Stockholm, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and many more, and toured internationally in the Persian language production of “Satellite with Love”. 

Ms. Zadegan was born in Heidelberg, Germany and raised in Northern California. She studied theater and dance on a performance scholarship at the University of California, Santa Barbara and graduated with honors and a BA degree in English Literature. She also studied at the Sorbonne University in Paris. She speaks Persian, French and German and has learned Spanish, Arabic and Hebrew while working in those languages. 

Ms. Zadegan is an ambassador for BuildOn.org and travels with them around the world building schools for children.

WiFT-LA member, Sandy Parker, directed Alienated, which screened at this year's  New Orleans Film Fest. 

This futuristic film took the audience into a creative look of an unfortunate social change of society. It told an intense story of a teenage girl who seeks the help of her therapist to work through her feelings of isolation of a world change beyond her control and her past hauntings. Sandy's brilliant direction made for the perfect expression of the human mind.

WiFT-LA president, Shameka Gray, hosted a Q&A for the film Same God. Director, Linda Midgett and Dr. Larycia Hawkins delved into the audience's questions into the hardships that Dr. Larycia had to face. We are proud to support their cause. We are women who empower women.

Same God left a deep impression on its viewers. Many tears were shed. And our hearts were squeezed with the lesson of the pressure that society, at times, set upon others to conform to personal standards. This film shows the resiliency of the human spirit. Job well done to Linda Midgett and Dr. Larycia Hawkins!

This intimate festival is a part of the Loyola University New Orleans' Feminist Festival, as a celebration of women filmmakers and artists. The Feminist Festival is co-hosted by the Loyola New Orleans Women's Resource Center and the Loyola Film Society in honor of Women's History Month and International Women's Day 2018.

BRANDON FRANK: Brandon Frank has been engaged in legal, business and entertainment practice for nearly 15 years and has acted in the capacity of chief legal counsel, trial attorney, policy advisor, legislative editor, campaign coordinator, executive management, business, financial and tax credit consultant, deal-maker, investor, talent agent, sales representative, entertainment producer and events manager.  Brandon practices primarily intellectual property, entertainment and energy law, assists nonprofits, and advances initiatives linking intellectual property to social innovation, creativity, arts, STEAM/deeper learning, cultural continuity, workforce & sustainable development.  Brandon Frank was born in New Orleans and raised in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and has lived in Washington D.C., Nashville, and Los Angeles.  He currently resides in the French Quarter and manages the Law Office of Brandon Frank, LLC and other business interests in the entertainment, oil and gas, and technology industries.  Brandon received his Master of Laws (LL.M) from the American University Washington College of Law and Juris Doctorate (J.D.) from the Southern University Law Center and received his Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Louisiana State University.  He is admitted to practice law in Louisiana and the state and federal courts and is a member of the Louisiana State Bar Association and the New Orleans Bar Association.

MARY LOU BELLI: Currently a writer on NCIS, two time Emmy award-winning MARY LOU BELLI has been directing television for over 20 years including NCIS New Orleans, Station 19, Pitch, Monk, Famous In Love, Devious Maids, The Quad, American Woman, and Hart of Dixie as well as Wizards of Waverly Place, Sister, Sister, Girlfriends,and The Game. Her short film, Straight Eye for the Gay Guy won “Best Mini-short” at the California Independent Film Fest where she also premiered I Heard Something, a thriller that went on to play fests internationally. She has done ground-breaking work on web-series. Her most recent The Drink Lonely Wives Book Club is currently on the fest circuit. Mary Lou is the Co-chair of the Women’s Steering Committee at the DGA where she also serves on the Western Director’s Council, and the Leadership Council PAC. She is an Honorary Board member of the Alliance of Women Directors and a long time member of Women In Film.

Sean Flanagan and Jake Coburn, of Magnetbox Films, will be joining the WIFT family to discuss film distribution in the digital age and why filmmakers should have a release plan in place before the first day of shooting commences. Bring your questions and be ready to discuss your own projects, whether in development or wrapped, to learn how to chart the best course of action for your film including self distribution, negotiating your deals, and estimating your revenue streams.

SEAN FLANAGAN

Sean Flanagan is the co-founder and Head of Distribution of Magnetbox Films. Before this he served as the marketing and sales manager of Quiver, the independent film branch of aggregator Premiere Digital Services, where he worked on over five hundred films and TV series. Before this his work included multi-year stints at Cinema Libre Studio in marketing and publicity, Nielsen’s Media in TV marketing research, RK Films, MTV, Sports Illustrated, Gannett News, Ridley Scott Productions and many more. Magnetbox is producing I KNOW THAT VOICE the series, which was announced at Comic Con 2017, as well as SCOUTS a film starring Danny Glover and Loretta Devine and a script currently in development with Francisco Productions entitled KILLDEER. They recently sales repped the Ashley Judd film TRAFFICKED, which sold to Epic Pictures. 

JAKE COBURN

Jake Coburn is the co-founder and Head of Production of Magnetbox Films. He was previously the senior Account Manager for independent films at Premiere Digital. There, he served as the primary point of contact for several distribution companies and independent filmmakers and oversaw hundreds of titles from ingest all the way through delivery. Jake comes to the technical side of distribution by way of production, where he has done every production and post job under the sun. He has cut, sound mixed, and done VFX work on many films, as well as worked in commercials on projects for brands such as Kia, Apple, and Google. Magnetbox is producing I KNOW THAT VOICE the series, which was announced at Comic Con 2017, as well as SCOUTS a film starring Danny Glover and Loretta Devine and a script currently in development with Francisco Productions entitled KILLDEER.

• About Mari: WIFT LA Advisory Board member, New Orleans resident independent filmmaker Mari Kornhauser is a UCLA Film School graduate who has gone on to write on assignment for various studios and producers, including writing and co-producing two independent features, ZANDALEE, starring Nicolas Cage, and THE LAST RIDE (aka F.T.W.), starring Mickey Rourke. Kornhauser’s directorial debut was the award winning independent feature HOUSEBOUND (aka KITCHEN PRIVILEGES), starring Peter Sarsgaard, which she also wrote; FINDING HOME AGAIN was her first non fiction videography focusing on post-Katrina life and reconstruction in New Orleans. In 2011, she moved into television with WRECKERS; from 2011-2013, she wrote for the HBO Peabody award winning show, TREME, created by Eric Overmyer and David Simon and currently, she is in development on a television series and work-shopping her first full-length play. Kornhauser is a Professor of screenwriting at Louisiana State University.
